Short Term Side Effects

AsteproTrueMedCostThe most frequently reported short term effects are an unusual or bitter taste, feeling of discomfort or nose pain and sneezing. Some patients have also experienced a feeling of fatigue, sleepiness and in a few cases, nosebleed have been reported with this medication as well, although these instances are quite rare. Prior to using Astepro, it is recommended that patients inform their doctor or health provider about any medications they are taking and of any allergies they are experiencing. It is very important that the doctor is aware of the medical condition of the patient in case he or she is allergic to any of the ingredients in the nasal spray.

Long Term Side Effects

In a clinical trial involving 862 patients with rhinitis (non-allergic and perennial allergic), each were given 0.1% sprays twice a day. The results of the tests revealed that the most common long term side effects are the same as the short term ones, i.e. complaining of bitter taste, headaches, sneezing and a few cases of nasopharyngitis. However, none of the patients exhibited any signs of severe nosebleed or cold. The effect of Astepro on pregnant women is unknown so it is best avoided.

Drug Interactions

It is recommended that Astepro not be used with cetirizine since it can worsen the side effects and lead to prolonged drowsiness, dizziness and difficulty focusing and thinking. Combining the two medications can also impair judgment and lead to loss of concentration. Anyone using Astepro should also avoid or limit their intake of alcohol, and it is recommended that patients avoid driving until the side effects of Astepro has been determined.

How It Works

As a nasal antihistamine, Astepro works by relieving symptoms of rhinitis caused by the chemical histamine, which is responsible for triggering allergic reactions. Seasonal rhinitis takes place when the immune system reacts to an allergen like dust or pollen, causing the body to release histamine and leading to allergic symptoms. As an antihistamine, Astepro can block the symptoms and help you breathe.

Generic Alternatives

Astepro is available in generic form as azelastine. Other alternatives are azelastine and fluticasone propionate, beclomethasone diproprionate and budesonide.
